When a parent starts talking about moving, most families don't begin with the house. They begin with where she'll live. Can she stay home if she gets some help? If not, what would a new place cost?
Selling usually comes later, once you know where Mom is going. You can call me before that, though. I'm Lisa Dunn, a realtor with RE/MAX Results. I work with Bloomington families going through this.
While you're working out the next step, I can tell you what her house is worth and which repairs are worth making. Once there's a move date, we'll plan the sale around it, so she isn't paying for two homes longer than she has to.
It's okay if you don't have answers yet. A lot of my calls start with "we're not sure yet."
If you're still deciding whether she can stay home, take the Stay, Modify or Move scorecard.

How do we compare senior cooperatives?
Ask every building the same questions. Then you can line up the answers side by side.
- What's the share price? What's the monthly charge, and what does it cover?
- When someone moves out, how is their share sold? How long has that taken lately?
- What's the minimum age? Is there a waitlist?
- What's included? For example, heated parking, guest suites, a fitness room or outings.
- Can we see the most recent financial statements and the bylaws?
Bring the fee sheets to our call. We'll go through them together.
Should my parent sell the house before moving?
It depends on two things. Does she need the money from the house to buy in? And how long can she afford to pay for both homes?
We can work through that together. You can also read Should you sell before moving to senior living? or use the "What will I net?" worksheet.
Who helps sell a parent's house in Bloomington?
A realtor handles the house. If you need help with everything inside, a move manager or estate sale company can do that. If there's an estate or trust, an attorney may be involved too.
I can represent your parent on both sides, selling the house and buying the co-op. That way the two closings are planned together.
