Realtor who helps older adults move to senior living in Minnesota

When you're moving to senior living in the Twin Cities, the house is usually what holds things up. I'm Lisa Dunn, SRES®, CSA®, CSREC, with RE/MAX Results, and since 2003 I've helped older adults line up the sale of their home with their move-in date, so they aren't rushed or paying for two places longer than necessary.

How do I time the home sale with a move-in date?

Start with two dates: when the community can hold your apartment, and when you need the money from the house. Then we plan backward to a list date. Some people sell first, some move first, and some line them up closely. The sell-first guide explains each.

What if a health event means I have to move quickly?

Then we sort out what comes first, one call at a time. Often the move happens before the house is ready, and we prepare and sell it after. You've got to start somewhere. Start with one call.

What should I ask when touring senior living?

Ask about costs and what they include, levels of care, contracts and what happens if needs change. My touring guide has the full list.

Can the community and my family work with you?

Yes. With your permission, I keep the community's move-in staff and your family informed on dates, so everyone works from the same plan. Helping a parent? See selling a parent's home or the FAQ.

Your homework

Ask the community you like how long they can hold an apartment, and whether there's a fee to hold it.
