Senior real estate questions, answered
These are the questions Twin Cities older adults and their families ask me most, answered in plain language. I'm Lisa Dunn, SRES®, CSA®, CSREC, a REALTOR® with RE/MAX Results in Edina, and I've worked with older adults since 2003. If yours isn't here, call or text 612-599-3484.

What does it cost to work with you?
The first 30-minute call is free, with no pressure and nothing to sign. Real estate commissions are negotiable, and we agree on them in writing before your home is listed, so you know the numbers up front.
How do I choose a realtor for seniors?
Ask about experience with older clients, credentials like SRES®, how they'd price and prepare your home, and how they'll involve your family. My checklist lists the questions to ask.
What's the difference between a senior co-op and a condo?
In a Minnesota senior cooperative you buy a share in the cooperative, not a deed to your unit, and you pay a monthly fee and need board approval. In a condo you own your unit outright and pay association dues. See my co-op vs. condo guide.
Does a senior co-op include care?
Generally no. Senior cooperatives are independent living for people 55 and older. Residents arrange any care they need separately. Check each co-op's documents.
Does 55+ mean assisted living?
No. A 55+ community is age-restricted housing for independent living. Assisted living provides help with daily care and is licensed differently. See moving to senior living.
Does downsizing always lower costs?
Not always. A smaller home can mean less upkeep, but association fees, co-op monthly fees or senior living rent can add up. Compare the full monthly cost of each option. See downsizing.
Should I wait to move?
It depends on your health, your home and your plans. Many people find it easier to plan before they have to. The Stay, Modify or Move scorecard can help you think it through.
What do SRES®, CSA®, CSREC, GRI and SFR® mean?
SRES® is the Seniors Real Estate Specialist® designation from the National Association of REALTORS®. CSA® is Certified Senior Advisor® from the Society of Certified Senior Advisors. CSREC is Certified Senior Real Estate Consultant from Senior Advantage Academy. GRI is Graduate, REALTOR® Institute, and SFR® is Short Sales and Foreclosure Resource.
Is the first call really free?
Yes. The first 30-minute call is free, with no pressure and nothing to sign. Book a free call.
Can my adult children join?
Yes. Adult children are welcome in the conversation, by phone or video from wherever they live. The homeowner always stays the decision-maker. See help for adult children.
Can you help sell my parent's house?
Yes. I handle the real estate: timing, pricing and selling the home, plus buying the next one if needed. See selling a parent's home and probate and inherited homes.
Which areas do you serve?
The seven-county Twin Cities metro: Hennepin, Ramsey, Dakota, Anoka, Washington, Scott and Carver counties. My office is in Edina, and I come to you. See areas.
What is the Move Manual?
It's Your Move is my free guide to planning a later-life move. It answers three questions: Where should I move? What's the best way to pay for my new home? What should I do with all my stuff? Get it at movemanual.net.
